If you’re interested in buying an ATV, there are a few important factors you’ll need to consider. We’ve put together a helpful guide so you can select the ATV that will be perfect for you. Once you’re ready, come visit our location in Mandan, North Dakota and browse our huge inventory!

ATV Type

Generally speaking, there are two types of ATVs. Utility ATVs are generally boxier and have features meant to help riders carry various cargo. They’re also great for traveling extremely long distances. Sport ATVs come with a number of features that make it easier to accelerate and ride over rough terrain. They’re largely used for recreation so their build is a bit smaller. While both types will be great off-roading vehicles, how you plan to use your ATV will affect which model you’ll need.

Rider Experience

It’s important that you match the power of your ATV’s engine to your skill level. If you’re a bit of a beginner and purchase an ATV with an overpowered engine, you’re likely to crash. We generally advise buying a vehicle with an engine range of 250 to 300 ccs. However, if you’re a more experienced driver with a 300 ccs engine, your ATV won’t be able to perform the way you need it to. When browsing local dealerships be sure to ask the sales rep for the engine specs.

Included Features

It’s very popular to customize an ATV. As such, a number of models will appear very simple and have few included features. If you’re unfamiliar with ATV maintenance or don’t plan on buying extra equipment, you’ll want to avoid these models. You can make a small list of what you’d like your ATV to do or what features you’d like included before you start shopping. For example, if you want to ride with a friend, you’ll want to look for a model with multi-seating, good suspension, and lightweight design.

Terrain

You’ll be able to travel easily across any terrain with your ATV. That being said, they’re most effective for speed and stunts on compact dirt. If you’re planning on speeding through a swampy area, you might want an ATV that’s more specialized for mud. Not only will you be faster, but the model will also come with helpful implements that will make it better suited for your preferred terrain.

Budget

Your budget will obviously have the most influence over your decision. If you see a model with everything you want, but it’s way out of your budget, you might take a look at some of the used ATVs on the lot. Or, you might buy a cheaper model and customize it with some of the same features. No matter what you decide to do, we advise having a budget before browsing a dealership's inventory. You can also look into financing your vehicle, or setting up monthly savings goals.
